You play as Ayo, your not-so-average clown embarking on an epic journey in search of his missing (or perhaps ran away, or kidnapped?!) best friend and beloved dog, named Bo. He juggles in the park with his talented circus dog, Bo, hangs out at the carnival, and longs after the shoemaker’s daughter. In Ayo’s hometown, things are generally peaceful. Instead Ayo The Clown is a cutesy 2.5D platformer with the titular clown being the hero of the piece. It’s got an upbeat, playful look to it that drags you into the action and keeps you working to save that goofy dog of yours. Everything looks light and goofy (even if you’re surrounded by lava or those sharks mean to bite you), with characters bouncing and hopping as they move around.

It’s that charming, toy-like look that makes the game so wonderful to explore. The tank is kinda cute, though, so it jives with the rest of the aesthetic. And, if you weren’t sick of all of the things this clown can do with balloons, he can also make a sword out of one.

If getting a foe damp isn’t enough (or you need to hit something really hard), you have a large toy hammer to smash stuff with. Something nipping at you? A water balloon should calm it down. Didn’t quite make that jump? Pull out a balloon and float a bit. Ayo’s got quite a few tools in his pockets to deal with all of the troubles you’re going to run into, thankfully. Ayo the Clown may be the first game that made me feel that a shark (that was in the middle of trying to bite me) was adorable.
